SUMMARY:Geology of the Black Hills
DESCRIPTION:Take a field trip around the area to view geologic features associated with the uplift of the Black Hills of South Dakota. You will learn about the regional geology and the importance of pegmatites as we tour. We will see a variety of rock types and geologic structures\, and finish our trip at two former mines where you will have the opportunity to collect your own keepsake specimens. We will drive up to most locations. One location has a short walk along level terrain. The former mines are close to the road but will have short walks on uneven\, wooded terrain.&nbsp\;

SUMMARY:Hike - Black Elk Peak / Cathedral Spires - all day (strenuous minus)
DESCRIPTION:7.5 mile\, 1500 foot total climb "strenuous minus" loop hike\; 38 min. drive each way.\n\nThe Summit's toughest hike\, you'll reach the historic lookout tower on top of the highest peak from here to the Canary Islands off Africa\, at 7\,242 feet. The four-state view includes "awe-inspiring rock spires". This popular but rocky hike is half-forested\, helpful if a thunderstorm pops up. Our early start will beat the crowds & most likely the thunderstorms.\n\nYour leaders will provide historical context\, from the name change from Harney Peak to the attempt by Custer to summit this peak on horseback (unsuccessful\, which\, from West Point to Little Bighorn\, was one of his specialties!)

SUMMARY:Hike - French Creek Natural Area (moderate)
DESCRIPTION:About 4.5 miles\, 250 foot total climb "moderate" out & back hike\; 37 min. drive each way.\n\nThis first hike of the week is a good intro to the region's granite-palisaded\, wetland-bottom canyon ecology due to our local naturalist's expertise. Most of the hike is in one of Custer State Park's two designated natural areas (horses prohibited).\n\nWe'll want to take streamside stops\, & must\, to allow us to change from hiking shoes to the required sports (Teva) sandals. When scouted in Sept.\, elk\, bison\, rattlesnakes\, & maybe bighorn sheep were expected but not spotted. It was dry enough so that all six crossings (if we get that far) were done with dry shoes using good to excellent rock-hopping skills\, none of which we can count on! Due to thigh-high poison ivy in (not just adjacent\, but in) the trail\, long pants are highly recommended. The hike will be worth the trouble!

SUMMARY:Photography - Red Valley Backroads: Camera Eyes on NPS #5 & 6 Roads
DESCRIPTION:The land in Wind Cave National Park is sacred land to the Cheyenne and Lakota. &nbsp\; There is a story of how the Lakota emerged from the spirit world through a passageway called&nbsp\;MAKA ONIYE\,&nbsp\;or “breathing earth”. &nbsp\;This was Wind Cave. &nbsp\;People were to wait in this spirit world until Earth was ready for them to be born.\n&nbsp\;\nAs I scouted the land above the cave\, I used my “camera eyes”\, perpetually scouring the landscape for great photo opportunities. &nbsp\;As I peered across the spacious\, rolling hills\, I began to view the top layer of the prairie as skin. &nbsp\;When the skin is peeled back\, what’s below emerges. &nbsp\;This field trip has us traversing two above-ground backroads of Wind Cave National Park. &nbsp\;The entry road into the southern boundary of the Park is aptly called Red Valley Road\, and&nbsp\;red it is!! &nbsp\; As we progress along these roads\, we are quite probably traversing above some remarkable land features that are hidden to us by the prairie skin. &nbsp\;In a few places\, the skin has been peeled back by the great powers of the Earth – water\, wind\, and fire\, and we become privy to the beauty underneath the prairie skin.&nbsp\;\n&nbsp\;\nThe treasures that await us are deep red winding gullies\, solitary sentinel trees\, yucca\, mullein\, bison\, prairie dogs\, fantastic rock formations\, and curious donkeys. You’ll develop your&nbsp\;“camera eyes”&nbsp\;and with plenty of help available from your (mostly) fearless leader\, you can maximize gorgeous compositions to bring home.\n&nbsp\;\nI will be bringing my cell phone\, of course\, but also my DSLR and one zoom lens that will accommodate my personal aesthetic. &nbsp\;I found the brightness of this environment to be challenging\, due to my cell phone’s screen being quite hidden by the glare of the sun. &nbsp\;Cell phones will still gather amazing images\, but help yourself out by bringing a wide-brimmed hat. &nbsp\;(If you don’t own one\, before the Summit is the time to shop for one!) &nbsp\;It will shade the brightness sufficiently to help you see the screen and take your compositions more seriously. &nbsp\;A DSLR will be the key to slowing down and really painting your compositions on your image sensor. &nbsp\;With today’s image stabilization built in to most DSLR bodies and lenses\, you will be able to make camera settings that allow you to leave the tripod at home or in your cabin. &nbsp\;Your (mostly) fearless leader will assist you in knowing those camera settings.\n&nbsp\;\nThis is a road trip\, not a hike\, and will be offered twice. &nbsp\;We’ll stop and shoot at places where my “camera eyes”&nbsp\;detected great opportunities for images that define the land that hides Wind Cave under the prairie skin. &nbsp\;I aim for you to develop your own interpretation of this remarkable landscape\, and maybe you’ll adopt my sense that the prairie has many treasures hidden below its skin.&nbsp\;\n&nbsp\;\nComfort Notes:\n1)&nbsp\; &nbsp\;&nbsp\;There are no bathrooms\, but halfway through the trip\, I’ve identified a pretty good spot in some trees to pee discreetly. Bring a bit of tissue and a plastic sandwich bag to collect your tissue. I’ll have a larger plastic bag to contain your used supplies and we’ll toss everything when we get to a waste bin back in civilization.)\n&nbsp\;\nI strongly frown on sandals or open-toed shoes for this trip. &nbsp\;Closed shoes help protect from ticks. &nbsp\;I wear leg gaiters permeated with permethrin. &nbsp\;From the van to where you’ll stand for best compositions\, you need to walk “over there” (i.e.\, not far) through short prairie grass. &nbsp\;Bring closed shoes\, some kind of tick protection\, and leave the sandals in your room.\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Ramble - Mount Rushmore and Horse Thief Lake
DESCRIPTION:This is a winning combination if you like history and a lakeside ramble! We’ll start off by driving along Iron Mountain Road to Mt. Rushmore. You’ll get a true sense of how large Custer State Park is and start to get the feel of this landscape. Once at Mt. Rushmore\, we’ll walk the Avenue of the Flags\, see the monument from the terrace\, and have time in the Visitor Center to see exhibits and to watch the movie that gives more background on this historic site. We’ll take a short (.2 mile each way) ramble on a paved pathway\, which leads to a platform that provides a closer look at the monument. Be sure to bring some money to indulge in the Thomas Jefferson Ice Cream - handmade ice cream utilizing Thomas Jefferson’s original recipe\, which has received rave reviews from everyone we have met!&nbsp\;\nOn our loop back to the State Game Lodge\, we’ll stop at lovely Horse Thief Lake and ramble the Forest trail on the lakefront. There are 35 stairs (wide\, not steep\, handrails on both sides) leading to the lake\, and this ramble is level and easy\, and will be about a half mile total.

SUMMARY:Architects of the Grassland: Explore the Prairie with American Prairie Naturalists
DESCRIPTION:Step off the beaten path and into the complex\, interconnected world of the American prairie. While the grasslands may look like an open expanse at first glance\, they are actually a bustling\, intricately woven ecosystem shaped by remarkable inhabitants. Join naturalists from American Prairie for an immersive walk in the prairie. On this casual walk\, we will journey near a thriving prairie dog town and explore how three keystone species—bison\, beavers\, and prairie dogs—act as nature’s ultimate architects. You will discuss phenology and other seasonal observations\, and the important role of disturbance ecology in shaping the plains. The walk will also discuss historic species loss on the plains\, as well as and the work and research underway to help recover the&nbsp\;populations and restore ecological processes of the prairie.&nbsp\;\nAmerican Prairie is a nonprofit with a mission is to create one of the largest nature reserves in the United States\, a refuge for people and wildlife preserved forever as part of America’s heritage. They work with organizations such as the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute and National Geographic.\n\n

SUMMARY:Ramble - Sylvan Lake Ramble
DESCRIPTION:Start your week at one of the most popular spots in Custer State Park. It’s a sunny and pleasant level path\, which we’ll do as an out & back ramble (close to 1 mile) due to a difficult section at the far end of the lake\, which would not be suitable for a ramble. The option to continue the loop on your own is available for those who don't mind traversing uneven ground.&nbsp\;If time allows\, for the out-and-back folks\, we’ll explore the other side of the lake.

SUMMARY:Hike - Clark Park (moderate)
DESCRIPTION:4.0 mile\, 450 foot total climb "moderate" loop hike\; no drive.\n\nWhat's special about this route is that nobody else will be there. That could improve our wildlife spotting chances\, even in the heat of midday. Scouting this hike included a close encounter with elk & plenty of bison evidence. Instead of a peak\, waterfall\, lake\, or rock spire\, this hike gets to a "park". In this part of the country\, a "park" is a high altitude meadow\, a large open area\, & relatively less steep.\n\nWe'll get some decent views and see up close the results of the Dec. 2025 Black Hills wind event of the century. We'll be off trail 1/4 of the time\, in some rocky areas with awkward footing\, but the poison ivy omnipresent elsewhere is absent here. This area has rebounded slowly but nicely from the big 1988 Galena Fire.\n\n

SUMMARY:Hike w/ Geology - Empire Mine Ruins (moderate)
DESCRIPTION:This is a short out-and-back hike\, 2.5 miles with a 200-foot total climb\, to a former gold mine where structures and equipment associated with the mine are still present. The main structures are located near the top of a slope.&nbsp\;This is a fun chance to poke around interesting old wooden and brick mining ruins & excavations from as early as the 1890s. The photogenic old structures and interpretation from veteran Summit geology expert Dave Egan set this hike apart as a unique opportunity. The gold\, silver\, and garnet mining here began in the 1890s. Collectors have reported finding specimens of garnet\, pyrite\, and disseminated gold flakes in the area -- collecting is allowed.\n\n50-minute drive each way

SUMMARY:Ramble - Charles Badger Clark's Cabin Tour & Ramble
DESCRIPTION:Badger was the first poet laureate of South Dakota and spent his last 30 years living in his cabin in Custer State Park. His poetry focused on the life of cowpokes and what it was like to live in the West. His poems give us a great flavor of life here in the early to mid 1900’s. After a guided tour of his cabin\, given by a local expert\, we’ll ramble the 1-mile loop in the forest behind his home. It is a forest trail that’s not rocky\, but sometimes has occasional tree roots\, so care is needed while walking the trail. There are sections of incline and descent but nothing dramatic and well take it slow. Along the way interpretative signs give more background on Badger’s life\, as well as share some of his stories and poetry.\nLook for the combination of Heddy Draw Ramble & a tour of the Badger Clark cabin being offered as an alternative afternoon trip. This class does not do the ramble from Badger’s cabin.

SUMMARY:Photography & Scenic Drive - Rushmore\, Crazy Horse & Needles Highway
DESCRIPTION:If you want to travel along a great road and see the best sights to photograph in Custer State Park\, this is the trip for you. We will leave early (7 AM) to get the best warm morning light on&nbsp\;the presidential faces\, but we will photograph them from an unusual perspective. Iron Mountain&nbsp\;Road winds through the Ponderosa Pines of Custer SP and the Black Hills\, making its way&nbsp\;toward Mt. Rushmore. Along this road\, we will pass through three short tunnels\, each of which&nbsp\;frames the faces of all four presidents on Mt. Rushmore. We will make a stop at each tunnel to&nbsp\;capture these unique photos\, along with a stop at Norbeck Overlook\, which also gives a great view&nbsp\;of the presidents of Mt. Rushmore. Next\, we stop at Mt. Rushmore proper to get the traditional&nbsp\;and close-up view.\n\nWe then make our way to the majestic silhouette of the iconic Crazy Horse Memorial. We will&nbsp\;not go into the memorial\, but we will be able to photograph Crazy Horse from a distance.&nbsp\;Then it is onward through a few more tunnels for a stop at the most photographed lake in the&nbsp\;Black Hills\, Sylvan Lake. This lake is known for its large granite cliffs that hang over the lake. If&nbsp\;we have a still morning with no wind\, the reflections are amazing. After Sylvan Lake\, we pass&nbsp\;through the narrowest tunnel in the Black Hills\, roughly 8 feet-4 inches wide (yes\, our van will&nbsp\;fit)\, the Needles Eye Tunnel. The other side of this tunnel drops us into the Needles District\,&nbsp\;where hundreds of granite spires point toward the clouds and sky\, and we stop to photograph&nbsp\;clouds\, trees\, sky\, and majestic spires. This whole excursion is a photographic extravaganza. Join us.&nbsp\;\n

SUMMARY:Hike - Little Devils Tower (vigorous plus)
DESCRIPTION:4.2 mile\, 800-foot total climb "vigorous plus" out & back hike\; 47 min. drive each way.\n\nAbout ¾ of this hike overlaps with the Black Elk and Cathedral Spires/Sunday Gulch hikes. What's unique is a steep granite slab scramble to the top for the Black Hill's 2 nd best view\, at 6\,870 feet above sea level. It's as close to the "incredible rock spires" as possible\, hiking through quaking aspen country on the way to and from. If you conclude that the rock formations & "look like huge pancakes turned on edge and stuck in the ground\, " you'll get no argument.\n\nAt the top\, after this Summit's steepest (but short) rock scramble\, we'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the Cathedral Spires\, Black Elk Peak\, and much of the Black Hills.

SUMMARY:Tending to Our Eco-emotions with Community and Nature Connection Practices
DESCRIPTION:Does thinking about the state of our planet ever get you down? "Ecological grief” and “climate-anxiety” are just a few of the terms used to describe the sometimes overwhelming sense of loss\, despair\, and worry that comes from bearing witness to ongoing environmental devastation and the impacts of climate change on ecosystems and human communities. In this workshop\, we will explore community and nature connection practices to tend to our eco-emotions. After a short introduction to the topic of eco-emotions and nature therapy\, we will engage in a community discussion that includes personal reflection and a guided group "resilience tree" craft. This will be followed by a selection of somatic practices to foster nature connection\, including a short\, silent awe walk or guided nature sit. Please bring a journal\, if you feel inclined. We will come back together as a group to share the role of nature connection practices in coping with eco-emotions. The goal is to leave this session with increased compassion and a greater sense of community in the emotional labor that is part of caring for our Earth's ecosystems and human communities.&nbsp\;\nThis workshop is facilitated by Jessica Pratt\, a community ecologist and teaching professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of California\, Irvine.\n\n

SUMMARY:Hike - Mystery Hike (vigorous)
DESCRIPTION:2.5 mile\, 700 foot total climb "vigorous" lollipop (mostly out & back) hike\; 47 min. drive.\n\nSame hike as the afternoon Mystery Hike. We'll almost certainly not see anyone else. It's the first Summit Mystery Hike since Dave Egan's one in the Redwoods in 2022\, and the first with Dave L. since 2016 in New Mexico (like this one\, historical sites are involved). Avoiding the thigh-high poison ivy along 20% of the trail is possible\, but those with more susceptibility may want long pants. It's pleasantly shady 4/5 of the way.... SUMMARY:Hike - Cathedral Spires / Sunday Gulch - all day (strenuous)
DESCRIPTION:6.3 mile\, 1300 foot total climb "strenuous"\; one-way hike\; 42 min. drive each way.\n\nThis gem of a route is simply the most lake and rock spire scenery one can pack into a hike. Not to be missed.** To make it more accessible & enjoyable\, we will self-select into two groups. The group feeling a bit less fit will start from Cathedral Spires Trailhead\, nicely providing an afternoon option for doing as little or as much of the Sylvan Lake & Sunday Gulch loops as desired. The other half will start on those loops and will have no options to skip anything in the afternoon. Your group may (or may not) switch leaders when you pass each other a bit before lunch.\n\n**If not up for 1300 feet of climb(!)\, please choose\, for some of the same scenery\, the Cathedral Spires Hike\, or one of the Summit rambles at the iconic\, dramatic Sylvan Lake.

SUMMARY:Photography - Whistles & Faces
DESCRIPTION:Explore iconic sites of the Black Hills. From the historic 1880s train to the evolving image of Crazy Horse\, this trip provides opportunities to see some of the famous sites of the area\, guided by a photographer to make sure that you will get the perfect images to make your friends and family jealous. Maybe no other sound brings such visions of freedom or loneliness as does the sound of a train whistle. The sight of a steam-driven train chugging across the prairie and through the forest represents timeless history. We will travel to just east of Hill City to photograph an\nauthentic 1880 steam engine train as it climbs the 6% grade up Tin Mill Hill. The climb for the&nbsp\;train should provide an ample amount of steam and smoke emitted from the train to make for&nbsp\;some wonderful photographs\, and the sound of the steam whistle as the train crosses a road will&nbsp\;make for outstanding video if you choose to shoot that medium.\n\nAfter our train photos\, we will make our way to the Crazy Horse Memorial to photograph&nbsp\;an amazing work in progress. This privately funded memorial began construction in 1948.&nbsp\;Currently\, the 87.5-foot face has been completed\, and in 2023\, the 263-foot-long left hand and&nbsp\;arm were finalized\, leaving only detail work for this section. We will shoot photos from the&nbsp\;viewing deck\, looking for morning light that will provide soft\, directional lighting to enhance the&nbsp\;features of the face. A telephoto shot will be required\, so be prepared to use all the “reach” that&nbsp\;your lens or phone camera can muster. If you have a tripod\, bring it. To isolate the carved face\,&nbsp\;we will shoot f8 to f11\, or if you are using a phone camera\, you can isolate the face in post-production. Your guide will help you do this. A bonus photo will be a shot of a 1:25 scale white&nbsp\;granite model of the completed sculpture\, lined up with the current carving on the mountain\,&nbsp\;capturing both for comparison.&nbsp\;Finally\, we will drive to Mount Coolidge Lookout and Fire Tower at an elevation of&nbsp\;6\,023 feet. This stone tower was built by the CCC in the 1930’s and 40’s. From this vantage&nbsp\;point\, you will be able to see Crazy Horse Memorial in the distance as well as the face of George&nbsp\;Washington on Mount Rushmore in the far distance. If you have binoculars\, bring them. Your&nbsp\;guide will have a 60x spotting scope with an attachment for phones that will allow you to gather&nbsp\;a photo of both Crazy Horse and Washington through the scope\, weather permitting. This will be&nbsp\;a fabulous morning of trains and faces\, providing you with memories to last a lifetime. Let’s go&nbsp\;have fun.

SUMMARY:Ramble - Sylvan Lake Ramble
DESCRIPTION:This popular spot in Custer State Park gives us the chance to see awesome rock formations that line much of the shore of Sylvan Lake. It’s a sunny and pleasant level path\, which we’ll do as an out & back ramble (close to 1 mile) due to a difficult section at the far end of the lake\, which would not be suitable for a ramble. If time allows\, we’ll explore the other side of the lake. We’ll return via Needles Highway with a couple of stops along the way.

SUMMARY:$$ Tour- Jewel Cave Historic Lantern Tour (adventurous cave tour)
DESCRIPTION:The Historic Lantern Tour is an adventurous tour into Jewel Cave.\nStep back in to the past on the Historic Lantern Tour\, where your Park Ranger is dressed in a 1930s-style uniform. This adventure gives you a sense of what it was like to tour the cave in earlier days. Visitors enter and leave the cave through the historic entrance using an unpaved trail. The only light is provided by a lantern that most tour participants carry. This tour is considered&nbsp\;strenuous&nbsp\;and lasts about 1 hour and 45 minutes.\nThe tour route is approximately 1/2 mile long through low\, narrow passages\, and includes roughly 500 steep wooden steps (ladder-like stairs). Some of the stairs require participants to go down backwards. This tour requires some bending\, stooping\, and duck walking along an unpaved\, rocky trail. \n\nPreparing for a Historic Lantern Tour\n- Sturdy\, lace-up hiking boots or shoes (designed for trail) with aggressive tread are required. No slick-soled or open-toed footwear is permitted. Tennis shoes\, five-fingered toe shoes\, sandals\, cowboy boots\, and climbing shoes of any kind are not allowed. If questionable\, park rangers may ask that you change your footwear before taking part in the tour. If the visitor does not have appropriate footwear\, they will be denied access to the cave tour.\n- Wear long pants and a light jacket or sweater. The cave temperature is 49°F or 9°C. Wear appropriate clothing to spend an hour and twenty minutes in the cool temperatures.\n- Persons who have heart or respiratory conditions\, foot or lower joint problems\, have recently been hospitalized or have claustrophobia should talk with a park ranger before selecting this tour. All tour participants must be able to navigate the stairs unassisted.\n- Due to the rugged nature of the cave and for personal safety\, please leave large cameras\, all bags\, and other items secured in your vehicle. Cameras must fit in your pocket.\n- All visitors participating in the Historic Lantern Tour are required to walk through a decontamination tray to prevent the spread of white-nose syndrome (WNS)\, which is a fungal disease that impacts bats. All shoes\, clothes\, or gear worn in Jewel Cave may not be allowed in any other caves or mines. This includes private caves and mines within South Dakota and around the world.\n\n

SUMMARY:Scenic Tour & Photography - Enveloped By The Badlands: Good Lands for Photography
DESCRIPTION:"… I was unprepared for that revelation called the Dakota Bad Lands. &nbsp\;What I saw gave me an indescribable sense of the mysterious elsewhere – a distant architecture\, ethereal… an endless supernatural world more spiritual than the earth but created out of it.”&nbsp\; Frank Lloyd Wright\, 1935\n“…some magnificent city of the dead…” (Dr John Evans\, Explorer).\n“…the whole region seems a part of another world…not easily forgotten…”&nbsp\; (Thaddeus Culbertson\, paleontologist)\n“…peaks and valleys of delicately banded colors – colors that shift in the sunlight…and a thousand tints that color charts do not show…”&nbsp\; (Freeman Tilden\, conservation writer)\n\nYou can’t travel to southwest South Dakota and not visit the Badlands\, or in Lakota\, “mako sica”. &nbsp\;It’s too hot for a traditional hike\, but this van trip will do the walking for you. &nbsp\;Your (mostly) fearless leader found a safe\, flat gravel road that defines this land and brings you as up close and personal as such roads get! &nbsp\;This trip is repeated twice for the Summiteers’ convenience. This is our only trip to the Badlands and is open to photographers and those who want to experience the National Park. \n\nBadlands National Park comprises two sections\, the North and South Units\, connected by a thin strip. &nbsp\;Our immersive road is located on this thin strip\, and is\, fortunately\, the closest point of the Badlands to our Summit site. &nbsp\;One way\, our trip to this site is 1 hour and 15 minutes\, but worth every mile. &nbsp\;Our destination\, Sheep Mountain Road\, is\, itself\, less than 3 miles long and we’ll emerge from the vans at many stopping points along the road to collect unique and irreplaceable images.&nbsp\;\n\nOur road is a live geology class that reveals many processes that created the Badlands. &nbsp\;From alluvial fans to hoodoos\, the formations are right in front of you. &nbsp\;As inhospitable as the land seems\, the land in and around the Badlands supported humans for 11\,000 years. &nbsp\;The earliest people were mammoth hunters\, followed by nomadic tribes\, bison-hunting Lakota\, and eventually trappers\, miners\, and homesteaders. &nbsp\;But the Badlands itself cannot be tamed and is a land of both dread and fascination\n\nI will be bringing my cell phone\, of course\, but also my DSLR and one zoom lens that will accommodate my personal aesthetic. &nbsp\;I found the brightness of this environment to be challenging\, due to my cell phone’s screen being quite hidden by the glare of the sun. &nbsp\;Cell phones will still gather amazing images\, but help yourself out by bringing a wide-brimmed hat. &nbsp\;(If you don’t own one\, before the Summit is the time to shop for one!) &nbsp\;It will shade the brightness sufficiently to help you see the screen and take your compositions more seriously. &nbsp\;A DSLR will be the key to slowing down and really painting your compositions on your image sensor. &nbsp\;With today’s image stabilization built in to most DSLR bodies and lenses\, you will be able to make camera settings that allow you to leave the tripod at home or in your cabin. &nbsp\;Your (mostly) fearless leader will assist you in knowing those camera settings.\n\nABSOLUTELY NO OPEN SHOES OR SANDALS. &nbsp\;CLOSED HIKING SHOES OR SNEAKERS ONLY! YOU WILL THANK ME LATER.\n(Comfort Note: There are no bathrooms\, or trees to hide behind. But we can designate a private “room” behind the van. &nbsp\;Bring a bit of tissue and a plastic sandwich bag to collect your tissue. I’ll have a larger plastic bag to contain your used supplies and we’ll toss everything when we get to a waste bin back in civilization. It’s for this reason that I avoid coffee when heading to the wilderness without relief stations. &nbsp\;You might consider the same on this morning!)&nbsp\;

SUMMARY:$$ Rock Climbing - Advanced
DESCRIPTION:Join local outfitter\, Sylvan Rocks\, for a full day of advanced rock climbing. Although it is called an advanced class\, this climbing trip is appropriate for all skill levels as long as you can climb all day. This custom trip operates at a 3:1 ratio\, ensuring customized route selection for the group. The small groups will be determined by skill level. On this trip\, you can expect to learn how to lead belay\, learn about traditional climbing equipment\, reach the summit of a formation (likely more than one summit)\, and climb numerous routes. You will also be taught how to rappel off the summit of a formation (with a backup). This trip is perfect for individuals who want to increase their climbing knowledge and explore more unique climbing in the Black Hills. This trip will take place from Sylvan Lake\, but will use customized routes that are different from the beginner class based on the ability of the group. You will climb the remainder of the day and return to the parking lot around 2:00 pm.&nbsp\;\n\nCost: $210

SUMMARY:Hike - Black Elk Peak / Cathedral Spires - all day (strenuous)
DESCRIPTION:7.5 mile\, 1500 foot total climb "strenuous" loop hike\; 38 min. drive each way.\n\nThe Summit's toughest hike\, you'll reach the historic lookout tower on top of the highest peak from here to the Canary Islands off Africa\, at 7\,242 feet.

SUMMARY:Hike & Photography - A Morning Hike with Merlin (moderate minus)
DESCRIPTION:This is a 'moderate minus'\, no climb\, one-way 3.0 mile hike\, with a 26 min. drive to the start\, 5-minute drive from the end.\n\nLooking for something different? How about an easy\, quiet morning photography (or time to sketch or just slow down and take in your surroundings) hike&nbsp\;with Merlin? Merlin the wizard\, you say? Nope\, Merlin the bird ID app. We will walk slowly down&nbsp\;the Grace Coolidge trail (an easy trail)\, which winds through a cool Ponderosa Pine forest along&nbsp\;Grace Coolidge Creek\, crossing the creek multiple times on easily navigated foot bridges. The&nbsp\;intent here is not to cover distance but to slow down\, observe\, enjoy\, and\, when possible\, identify&nbsp\;and photograph (or sketch) species of both flora and fauna. \n\nHow does a bird ID app come into play? Well\,&nbsp\;first thing we will do\, if you don’t already have the free app\, is to help you download the app&nbsp\;onto your phone and show you what it can do for bird identification. Then we walk…. slowly….&nbsp\;quietly…. trying to let all our senses show us what is alive. From there\, it is up to you. Your&nbsp\;guide(s) will always be available to give you one-on-one suggestions on how to compose the&nbsp\;macro shot of the lupines next to the stream\, or the broader landscape photo of the cattails&nbsp\;swaying in the breeze\, or identifying and then patiently waiting for that small bird you identified&nbsp\;using the app\, to stop just long enough for you to capture the perfect shot. Subjects to photograph&nbsp\;may be as large as a bison or deer or as small as a dragonfly\, frog\, bird\, or water strider. We will&nbsp\;also scan the dead trees (snags) for cavity nesting birds. Hopefully\, summer flowers will be in&nbsp\;bloom. Bring your camera (or phone)\, your binoculars\, your tripod if you have one\, your journal\,&nbsp\;and join us for a diverse and magical morning along the creek. \n\nCaution: Bison are beautiful&nbsp\;animals and appear docile. They are beautiful\, they are not docile. If you encounter one\, give&nbsp\;them a very wide berth (50 yards or more). Photograph them from a large distance away.&nbsp\;Immediately let your guide know if you see one.

SUMMARY:Hike - Coolidge Ponds to Center Lake (uphill\, moderate)
DESCRIPTION:3.0 mile\, 375 foot total climb "moderate" one-way hike\; 5 min. drive out\, 26 min. back.\n\nThe park's #1 oasis\, we'll hit all six ponds dammed in the 1930s by the CCC. Midway\, we'll briefly meet Matt Hays' Photo Hike. Our hike will be at a more brisk pace through this beautiful shaded valley named not after President Coolidge but for his wife Grace. One crossing requires a bit of rock hopping. We'll have time to relax at Center Lake at the hike's end. Poison ivy is rampant\, but presents no threat as this popular trail is wide enough. The entire hike is in one of Custer State Park's two designated natural areas (horses prohibited).\n\n

SUMMARY:Hike- Cathedral Spires (moderate)
DESCRIPTION:2 miles\, 50 feet climb\, moderate\, out and back\, 44 min drive each way\n\nThis trail\, designated by a (functioning) US Congress in 1977 as a National Landmark\, is the shortest\, gentlest hike for getting as close as possible to these "huge fantastic formations of granite". We'll also hike through an isolated botanical mystery: the only limber pine grove (trees hundreds of years old) to be found anywhere within 200 miles.

Along the way interpretative signs give more background on Badger’s life\, as well as share some of his stories and poetry.\n\nLook for the combination of Heddy Draw Ramble & a tour of the Badger Clark cabin being offered as an alternative afternoon trip. This class does not do the ramble from Badger’s cabin.

SUMMARY:Hike - Lovers' Leap (moderate plus)
DESCRIPTION:4.0 mile\, 600 foot total climb "moderate plus' loop hike\; no drive.\n\nA usually verdant (drought-dependent) stream-side stroll over a dozen footbridges and nice views across the Black Hills\, both in the same hike! With no vans to boot! This is "the" hike at our Summit lodging site. The version on the last afternoon with Matt will be at a more brisk pace.\n\nThe trail is particularly known for bison\, big horn sheep\, and wildflowers\; thus\, with Danny\, we have the perfect hike leader (the wildflower part\, at least!) An otherwise nice ridge walk on top provides stark evidence of the furthest reach\, almost to the buildings near here\, of the huge 2017 Legion Lake Fire\, and "bomb-like" devastation from the Dec. 2025 wind storm. Easily avoiding the thigh-high poison ivy along the trail is possible 90% of the way\; only those with more susceptibility may want long pants. Avoiding late afternoon thunderstorms requires a clockwise direction (which provides cover and actual shelter on the last 1/3 of the hike).\n\n

SUMMARY:Ramble - Legion Lake Ramble
DESCRIPTION:Located in the heart of Custer State Park\, Legion Lake offers a scenic retreat. Well ramble the trail that loops around the lake\, about three quarters of a mile in length. The first part of the trail is level and easy. The middle section has a bit of incline and is more rocky\, but is not dramatic and we’ll take it slow. The final stretch of the ramble is back to being level. Great views of the lake are possible all along the trail. A local naturalist will join us on the trail\, enhancing the experience and providing more information.&nbsp\;

DESCRIPTION:"… I was unprepared for that revelation called the Dakota Bad Lands. &nbsp\;What I saw gave me an indescribable sense of the mysterious elsewhere – a distant architecture\, ethereal… an endless supernatural world more spiritual than the earth but created out of it.”&nbsp\; Frank Lloyd Wright\, 1935\n“…some magnificent city of the dead…” (Dr John Evans\, Explorer).\n“…the whole region seems a part of another world…not easily forgotten…”&nbsp\; (Thaddeus Culbertson\, paleontologist)\n“…peaks and valleys of delicately banded colors – colors that shift in the sunlight…and a thousand tints that color charts do not show…”&nbsp\; (Freeman Tilden\, conservation writer)\n\nYou can’t travel to southwest South Dakota and not visit the Badlands\, or in Lakota\, “mako sica”. &nbsp\;It’s too hot for a traditional hike\, but this van trip will do the walking for you. &nbsp\;Your (mostly) fearless leader found a safe\, flat gravel road that defines this land and brings you as up close and personal as such roads get! &nbsp\;This trip is repeated twice for the Summiteers’ convenience. This is our only trip to the Badlands and is open to photographers and those who want to experience the National Park. \n\nBadlands National Park comprises two sections\, the North and South Units\, connected by a thin strip. &nbsp\;Our immersive road is located on this thin strip\, and is\, fortunately\, the closest point of the Badlands to our Summit site. &nbsp\;One way\, our trip to this site is 1 hour and 15 minutes\, but worth every mile. &nbsp\;Our destination\, Sheep Mountain Road\, is\, itself\, less than 3 miles long and we’ll emerge from the vans at many stopping points along the road to collect unique and irreplaceable images.&nbsp\;\n\nOur road is a live geology class that reveals many processes that created the Badlands. &nbsp\;From alluvial fans to hoodoos\, the formations are right in front of you. &nbsp\;As inhospitable as the land seems\, the land in and around the Badlands supported humans for 11\,000 years. &nbsp\;The earliest people were mammoth hunters\, followed by nomadic tribes\, bison-hunting Lakota\, and eventually trappers\, miners\, and homesteaders. &nbsp\;But the Badlands itself cannot be tamed and is a land of both dread and fascination\n\nI will be bringing my cell phone\, of course\, but also my DSLR and one zoom lens that will accommodate my personal aesthetic. &nbsp\;I found the brightness of this environment to be challenging\, due to my cell phone’s screen being quite hidden by the glare of the sun. &nbsp\;Cell phones will still gather amazing images\, but help yourself out by bringing a wide-brimmed hat. &nbsp\;(If you don’t own one\, before the Summit is the time to shop for one!) &nbsp\;It will shade the brightness sufficiently to help you see the screen and take your compositions more seriously. &nbsp\;A DSLR will be the key to slowing down and really painting your compositions on your image sensor. &nbsp\;With today’s image stabilization built in to most DSLR bodies and lenses\, you will be able to make camera settings that allow you to leave the tripod at home or in your cabin. &nbsp\;Your (mostly) fearless leader will assist you in knowing those camera settings.\n\nABSOLUTELY NO OPEN SHOES OR SANDALS. &nbsp\;CLOSED HIKING SHOES OR SNEAKERS ONLY! YOU WILL THANK ME LATER.\n(Comfort Note: There are no bathrooms\, or trees to hide behind. But we can designate a private “room” behind the van. &nbsp\;Bring a bit of tissue and a plastic sandwich bag to collect your tissue. I’ll have a larger plastic bag to contain your used supplies and we’ll toss everything when we get to a waste bin back in civilization. It’s for this reason that I avoid coffee when heading to the wilderness without relief stations. &nbsp\;You might consider the same on this morning!)&nbsp\;

SUMMARY:$$ FNS Tradition - Adventure Race
DESCRIPTION:For the first time\, the older half (we know who you are***) of our group will get to walk at leisure (not timed!) all of the uphill. Why didn't we think of that before!? You'll be doing a map reading game\, of course\, but one we've never used before. Mountain biking (all paved bike paths) is back this year\, just two miles (all downhill for the "older" set!) Averaging 35 adults aged 17 to 80 taking part each year\, this Thirteenth Annual Adventure “Race” will also have us all looking for those orange orienteering markers on foot (just a mile\, not counting detours to give bison a wide berth!) It's a grand total of 2¾ miles on foot\, less than last year.\n\nMostly on trails\, you’ll need to decide "Do I go left\, or right?" at least a dozen times. (Or for some of us\, "Do I follow those other folks or not?" \;) Our Adventure "Race" is really mostly a self-guided map hike to some pretty spots. Not sure of your orienteering map skills?... See Dave L. anytime during the week for some tips and a short "practice course." This event is for anyone with average agility and fitness and with at least a modicum of navigational skills.... So if you are slow-moving but quick-thinking\, this may be your event. Or at least pick a teammate smarter than you!\n\nFor only the second time\, those "competitive folks" at the finish line early can declare for the "long course" category & do another loop looking for markers near the creek and cabins marked on a clear aerial image map. That extra loop is just over half a mile (perhaps less if you go through the Lodge lobby\, but we highly discourage that!) The rest of us skip that loop. As always\, it's really only a "race" if you want it to be.\n \nFor the competitive folks among us\, we'll have a "masters" category (both 45+)\, another 60+\, plus our usual single-gender and mixed gender categories... Ok to sign up solo!.... to find a partner\, some folks always wait until the start of our event when we explain how it all works.&nbsp\; A challenge\, sure. Fun\, yes. Our motto: it’s more about the journey than the result! \n\n***Thus\, it strategically behooves everyone to recruit as many participants younger than themselves as\npossible!...just don't mention to the younger set that they'll have uphill hiking-biking! :-)\n\nRecommended items to bring: a narrow-point permanent red "sharpie" (we'll have some to lend)\, shoes for hiking-jogging on trails\, water\, sun protection and/or rain gear as needed\, and a compass (we’ll have some to lend)... No GPS/ cell phone nav. app use\, just the compass app.\n\nCost: $30

The version on the last afternoon with Matt will be at a more brisk pace. The trail is particularly known for bison\, big horn sheep\, and wildflowers\; thus with Danny we have the perfect hike leader (the wildflower part\, at least!) An otherwise nice ridge walk on top provides stark evidence of the furthest reach\, almost to the buildings near here\, of the huge 2017 Legion Lake Fire\, and\n"bomb-like" devastation from the Dec. 2025 wind storm.\n\nEasily avoiding the thigh-high poison ivy along the trail is possible 90% of the way\; only those with more susceptibility may want long pants. Avoiding late afternoon thunderstorms requires a clockwise direction (which provides cover and actual shelter on the last 1/3 of the hike.)\n\n

SUMMARY:Tour - Bison Center and Corral Tour
DESCRIPTION:Opened in 2022\, the Custer State Park Bison Center has quickly become a must-see destination for visitors of all ages. This facility tells the full story of the park’s iconic bison herd through a broad array of engaging\, interpretive\, and hands-on displays. In addition to the indoor exhibits\, ranger-led bison corral tours provide an invaluable up-close look at herd management and the ranching infrastructure that supports it. On these guided tours\, staff explain the layout and function of holding pens\, sorting chutes\, and other handling facilities\, show how feeding and water systems are organized\, and discuss the practical aspects of population and range management. The tours are designed to demystify the day-to-day operations involved in maintaining a healthy\, sustainable herd and to answer visitor questions about animal care\, seasonal movements\, and park stewardship. \n\n Monday’s session will include adults and the Junior Naturalists for a lively\, educational experience. On Monday\, the adults on the tour will get the opportunity to sort the "Junior Naturalist Bison" through the holding pens. After the bison are sorted\, they will head out\, and the adults will finish the tour.

SUMMARY:Tending to Our Eco-emotions with Community and Nature Connection Practices- Educator Focus
The goal is to leave this session with increased compassion and a greater sense of community in the emotional labor that is part of caring for our Earth's ecosystems and human communities.&nbsp\;\nThis workshop is facilitated by Jessica Pratt\, a community ecologist and teaching professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of California\, Irvine.\n**This session will be specifically geared towards educators and include discussion on the need and approaches to center the affective dimensions (i.e.\, emotions\, moods\, attitudes) of learning to better address eco-emotions more broadly in education spaces.\n\n\n\n
